Welcome to our digital presentation on the formative years (1930s - 1980) of the steelband movement in Trinidad and Tobago. This project illuminates key themes in the history of the steelband in general, in addition to giving specific attention to the steelband group The Casablanca Steel Orchestra in particular. We've organized audio clips and photographs into exhibits that give historical insights into the social significance of the birth of this musical instrument in the twin island nation of Trinidad and Tobago and its cultural influence on the wider Caribbean region.
This digital presentation was curated by Dr. Audra A. Diptee and Dr. David V. Trotman. They worked closely with band members of The Casablanca Steel Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago and are very grateful to those members who generously contributed material for this digital exhibition. This project was sponsored by the History Watch Project.
